Protecting Torch Lake

The purpose of this web page is to encourage the Isle Royale Seaplanes to move their operations to Houghton County Airport.

Seaplanes are extremely disruptive to the local community.

People have lived in quiet, residential neighborhoods for years, but now Isle Royale Seaplanes airport moved in and they now live on an airline runway.

Seaplanes are disruptive to nature

Eagles and migratory birds are protected by federal law from low-flying aircraft. We can show the seaplanes frequently violate these laws.

A Bald & Golden eagle at the cuts.

Houghton County Airport is 3 miles away. Isle Royal Seaplanes pass by it on the way out and on return. Not only is the airport and surrounding area accommodating to aircraft, the airport is 500’ higher than Torch Lake.

Flying out of Torch Lake means a 500’ climb just to get to the same height as the airport. This climb requires additional fuel demands that could quickly pay for the wheels needed to use Houghton County Airport that is 3 miles away and no disruptive to the local community.

The numerous take-offs and landings disrupt the peace and solitude Torch Lake, until recently, provided to its residents and users.  The irony of the users of Isle Royale Seaplanes who seek the quiet and solitude of Isle Royale yet selfishly destroy this same solitude once enjoyed by residents and users of Torch Lake should be recognized.

Encourage the Isle Royale Seaplanes company to move to Houghton County Airport!
